#16Days of Action with RISE UK

16 Days of Action

The UN campaign 16 Days of Action runs from 25th November to the 10th of December.

The full name of the campaign is 16 Days of Action on the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls. It is a global phenomenon and is planned to culminate on the 10th December, which is Human Rights Day. RISE is spearheading a number of local events to both inform and entertain.

This 16 Days we offer you 16 points of action to help shape your action here in Brighton & Hove.

Read more about RISE click HERE

1. Sign the pledge and wear the Ribbon

White Ribbon Pledge
I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about men's violence against women in all its forms.
If you can host a collecting box and be a sales point for Ribbons during this period please contact us.

2. Get informed

Visit the RISE Living Library at Jubilee Library on 26th November and Lewes Library on 3rd December Borrow a Living Book and hear direct from survivors and frontline workers about the impact of abuse and violence, and the support available

3. Go to the pictures

Two specialist screenings at the Dukes at Komedia will give you an additional layer of insight into how violence against women and girls manifests in our society.
Gaslight – Monday 30th November
The Color Purple – Sunday 6th December

4. Have a laugh

The award winning Charity Chuckle hosts Stand Up to Violence Against Women at the Komedia on Tuesday 8th December. Top notch comedy raising money for RISE and Survivors Network.

5. Read a book and write a blog

In February the world thought about what consent meant in relation to Mr Grey. The Consent in the City Campaign was launched to collect examples of where literature had excelled at promoting active meaningful consent. Let us know your examples at @BtnConsent

6. Learn together to safeguard the city.

Statistics show us that all services in the city will deal with survivors of intimate violence and trauma. Friends and relations often point first to the statutory services to provide immediate help and crisis care. Find out how to respond to disclosures and the statutory services responses through these specialist training days here.

7. Engage your school or universities

As a pupil, as a parent, as a governor as a teacher we know that education gives us the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate our own beliefs and prejudices. This #16Days let’s bring the consent and relationships debate to every classroom, teacher and pupil. I heart consent campaign

8. Get creative

You would be in excellent company, there are so many writers and activists who express themselves through craft and art. This positive self-esteem boosting way of raising awareness can be social or solo but it’s often thoughtful and compassionate. Check out Survivors Knitwork for ideas

9. Start a conversation in your churches and faith groups.

The biggest barrier for survivors in seeking help is the shame, secrecy and victim blaming that surround violence against women and girls. Every conversation that you start makes it easier for survivors to reach out for help. Resources for use in churches can be found here.

10. Make a donation

In the age of austerity, with cuts to services getting bigger all the time, more than ever our specialist services need the support of their communities. Donate to RISE here.

11. Work place mobilisation

We spend a huge amount of time at our workplace. Their culture shapes our lives and attitudes. Work can be a place of safety for survivors of domestic abuse but it can also increase their risk of serious harm. Can your workplace take on the #16Days challenge to ensure that it offers survivors the resources they need to stay safe? 16 Days Challenge

12. Make a complaint

Never underestimate the power of a well-placed complaint. With victim blaming rife in our traditional and media, advertising and entertainment industries #16Days might just be the time to let an editor know what you think.

13. Hold a fundraiser

There are so many ways to raise money for your specialist service this #16Days follow your passions, sponsor it, share it and raise essential funds for people affected by abuse and violence. See our fundraising page for more ideas.

14. Review the Policies and share your thoughts with your decision makers

It’s everyone’s responsibility to tackle violence against women and girls. Each year our national government publishes their updated action plan on tackling violence against women and girls. It’s available from the Home Office website. Read it, think about it and then let your MP know what you think.

15. Elected local officials

It’s not just national politicians with a responsibility to help us end VAWG. Ask your councillors and the important Police and Crime Commissioner how they intend to protect vital specialist services, prevent violence against women and girls and make our communities safer.

16. Take to social media

Share your thoughts and opinions on twitter, join the global discussion for how to prevent VAWG by following the UN Women accounts and those of the leading national services for women. There are always excellent resources, information and debates being had via social media during 16Days. Use hashtags #16days and #Brighton. Together let’s raise our voices and break the silence on violence against women and girls.

The @JudiDoodleCat Crowdfunding Campagin

See the Go Funding Me Campagin by Judi Doodle Cat, who create body doodling events.

Go Funding Me is a crowdfunding site, which doesn't require you to have goals or deadlines.

See Judi Doodle Cat's Campagin below

https://www.gofundme.com/h7nbcz8w

Many of you will have heard of, if not experienced, the ludicrous mayhem and legendary silliness of The Playpen, and world-famous-in-Brighton Bodydoodling. Some of you will not. (There are vid links for you!)

I invented these things whilst playing, and with them and the people who stumble into them, I make art happenings that centre on play.

The art of play is one with which we all were born . Many of us have forgotten how, but play has not lost its power just because we are adults. Aimless play allows us to relax, reconnect, laugh with our whole bodies, experience our bodies as Art and without shame, revert to childhood innocence and in that place, often, remember that we are creative because we are Human, not because we have a talent.
Art is the birthright of our species.

I long to get the money together to fund the purchase of a Playbus - a vehicle capable of taking the Doodlecats on tour around this country. Spreading the love, the silliness, the fun and the GLITTER; breaking down barriers and providing an antidote to Austerity.  The figure £25000 is a dream number, not unattainable I'm sure, but certainly we could do many things with less if we had to. In part the figure takes into account that
I believe in paid work, and I want to pay the artists who work with me. And I want what we offer to be free at the point of delivery.
I hope that if we can get the bus and the first tour funded, with your help, we will be in a position to apply for Arts Council funding to continue into the future.
If you believe that joy can save lives, like I do, please give generously. As silly as it all is, it is a truly transformative and healing thing too. It deserves to live, and it needs your help to grow.

#penguinsfavsongs

I have been doing #penguinsfavalbums every Sunday, I enjoyed this very much but at times I felt it limited me as plenty of songs I love but don't know much about the whole album.

So I am starting #penguinsfavsongs which is going to be a random adding of great songs, which I love and may add reasons why I love them

1st Nov 2015 - Monster Mash - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (well it is Halloween, and such a cool version of this cult song)

Will be adding more songs shortly

Bright Green Penguins's Guide to Christmas Gifts

Since I follow so many great creatives out there, I want to help support them and with Christmas coming up, what better idea is there than having the Bright Green Penguin's Guide to Christmas Gifts. I will be keeping this post update with more and more cool items. I am trying to find items, which will appeal to a variety of people, but all of them I think are cool.

So happy shopping! (and if you know anyone I should be featuring let me know)

Also this list is my part in trying to encourage the #justacard campaign, which is all about encouraging people to support local designers and shops. Click on the link below to find out more

The Christmas List

Will start off with Chocolate, as who wouldn't

Last day to nominate a Giving Tuesday Ambassador

2nd Dec is Giving Tuesday, this is a global campaign in response to the recent rise of Black Friday & Cyber Monday

It is all about promoting the act of giving, be it donating or volunteering your time, or helping to spread the word about how important giving is. I know from personal experience, over a decade ago something happened which made me realise events such as Christmas, the feeling you get from giving can out weigh the act of receiving a gift

I have supported this, which is why one of the reasons I set up to promote all the great people I know, who's aims are about giving back. Best example I can recommend is The Good Gym, a running group who combine getting fit with doing good deeds in the community

So today (29th Oct) is the last day to nominate a Giving Tuesday Ambassador for the UK, someone you think represents what giving is all about. This can be someone who gives a lot of their time volunteering or someone who has done amazing fundraising or someone you feel gives a lot to their community

See below for details how to nominate

Brighton Bricks - The Dream

Thanks to everyone who came along to last nights Brighton Bricks meet up

Good work was done on our logo idea, still a bit more tinkering & we should be done

This post is about two things, one to say this group is open to anyone who loves Lego & lives in the Brighton area. So feel free to spread the word about Brighton Bricks, come up with ideas about the groups directions. Ideas for events or ways to attract new members

So if you have ideas or suggestions about the following let me know:

  • Future events
  • Event location  - still at Alcampo or if people have any other suggestions
  • Events to be held evenings or weekends (or both)
  • How often should we have meet ups
  • Activities for future events
  • Ways to attract new members
  • Org or people we should connect with
  • Other Lego groups we can do partnerships with

The second thing is about my future ambitions for this group. The main one is to register as an Lego User Group (LUG), so we can enjoy the benefits of support from the Lego Group. We can only do this after being an active group for 12 months

I'm planning from next year to see if I can set up a stall at one of the many craft fairs throughout Brighton, selling Lego Minifigures  as well as stuff like Lego Crayons (I made them using the Lego ice cube moulds) and raising awareness of the group

My grand idea I would love to do is set up our own Lego exhibition at a venue in Brighton, where we can display models, have sellers etc. Of course this is a long way off but it is good to have something to aim form

So please feel free to post to the Facebook page or to our Twitter account if you have any ideas or can help us grow in any way

Spare Chair Sunday - Contact the Elderly Campaign

Did you know a third of people over the age of 70 in the UK eat alone every day

So The Bisto Together Project and the charity Contact the Elderly have teamed up together to form Spare Chair Sunday

See below for details about what Spare Chair Sunday is about

Sunday lunch should be a time of togetherness. The one meal we all look forward to, where we sit down with friends and family for good food and good times. Yet for 1 in 7 older people, it’s the loneliest time of the week.
So The Bisto Together Project and national charity Contact the Elderly have joined forces to create Spare Chair Sunday. A project that allows people to offer up a spare chair at their Sunday Lunch to an older person who would otherwise be eating alone.
For just a couple of hours of your time, you could make someone’s day. And of course, there’s nothing better than sharing some good food, great tales, and laughter around the table! If you can spare a chair at your table and host a meal, we’d love to hear from you. To sign up click here

#Justacard - The Avant Card Co

As part of the #justacard campaign, I will be featuring cool and interesting designers, who happen to make greeting cards. So you have no excuses not supporting them. So read all about The Avant Card Co

You can see all our products at www.theavant-cardcompany.com

The Avant-Card Company was created in West Norwood SE London July 2013.  We are a husband and wife team.  The illustrations are my own, but my wife plays an important role behind the scenes with, in her own words “the more mundane” part of running a business.  However, she is also a really helpful source of ideas and a great sounding board for me for my design ideas, and has a fantastic eye for colour.

The name for the brand was taken from the phase ‘avant-garde’ because I like to think our greeting cards are a little different or innovative to most, particularly the illustrations. Each of our greeting cards begins with the illustration, which I like to do by hand with as little technology involved as possible.

When it’s time to turn the illustration into a greeting card we like to keep things simple and local and eco friendly.  The card stock is sourced from an amazing paper factory just down the road in Brixton (John Purcell Paper), an Aladdin’s cave for paper and card stock.   The card stock we use is unique to John Purcell Paper which is a nice thought – that we are using something original to SE London.  Then it’s on to the printing and making stage.   Again not far from us, up the road in Crystal Palace, is the printers, Words & Pictures.  So as to ensure that the quality and look of the original illustration remains true to my original artwork, I work closely with the guys at the print and design company through the printing process, -  cutting and creasing the cards myself, on occasions.

The appreciation for handmade and craft products in the UK has improved in recent years which is great to see and to be a (very) small part of this is exciting.

SE London is brilliant for independent gift shops and boutiques that really appreciate the independent makers, and show this by regularly stocking our greeting cards.

We were surprised to have The National Trust  also take interest in our greeting cards and stock them in numerous shops thoughout the UK only six months from starting out The Avant-Card Co. Along with my wife and local support we plan to keep creating unique illustrated greeting cards and expanding to illustrated gifts, which we have just started to do with a small range of handmade acrylic pin badges.

You can see all our products at www.theavant-cardcompany.com

#penguinsfavalbums Vampire Weekend

This weeks album is the self titled debut album by Vampire Weekend, a band I first saw at Glastonbury back in 2010 (or was it 2011) Never heard of them before, but such catchy songs I just had to buy the album when I got back to reality. I think by the time I saw them they had already released two albums, so ended up getting both, but it is the first albums catchy songs which is special for me. Always been a big Paul Simon fan, so the echoes of that does help a lot
