Encouraging Learning Through Play

Gin Art @ Brush Brighton

Thursday night was the PV of the new exhibition at Brush Brighton, an art gallery / hairdressers.

My first visit there, and was impressed with their The Brighton Gin Art Prize exhibition, where Brush have joined up with Brighton Gin

People were invited to take a empty Brighton Gin bottle and customise it in any way they want. It was really interesting to see so all the different styles and takes on this. Wish I know about this beforehand, as it would have been cool to have a go.... but I do recommend checking out the exhibition.

See photos below, also they have a cool selection of cards & prints, so perfect way of support the #justacard campaign.

And I don't if this dog belongs to the owners or one of the visitors, but so cute!!!

Earthship Brighton - Crowdfunding appeal

Earthship Brighton have a crowdfunding appeal going on with

 https://www.buzzbnk.org/EarthshipBrighton

Earthship Brighton is the sustainable community centre for Stanmer Organics. This is a not-for-profit consortium representing 15 different groups operating at Stanmer Park, a 17 acre Soil Association accredited piece of land on the outskirts of Brighton. Earthship Brighton is the first project of the Low Carbon Trust, a not-for-profit co-operative company formed in 2001 to highlight the connection between buildings, the carbon emissions they produce and climate change through innovative construction projects and communications work.

Earthship Brighton, the first in England, is a beautiful structure made from recycled car tyres and sustainably sourced timber with adobe walls. We have a large glazed area which is south facing to maximise passive solar gain and solar water heating panels on the roof to provide hot water. Our electricity comes from photo-voltaics and a wind turbine and all our water is harvested from the rain. With our grey water being treated with planters and a reed-bed system for our black water, plus composting toilets, we will be able to recycle all of our human waste on site. The Earthship therefore gives us a glimpse of a luxury low carbon future - how a zero waste and zero energy society might look.

Inside the building there is a meeting room which can seat around 40 people theatre-style plus kitchen facilities and a relaxing atrium area. There is also an outside space that will increase seating capacity for events to 100. The Low Carbon Trust gives regular tours of the Earthship and we also offer training in low and zero carbon design and provide consultancy to community groups, companies and individuals all around the UK to seed and develop their own projects.

Fairy Bricks Building Contest - Christmas Windows Display

Fairy Bricks is a great charity that donates Lego to children's hospital wards around the world. They are holding a Christmas building competition

Via the Brickiest forum  http://www.bricksetforum.com/discussion/21478/official-fairy-bricks-building-contest-christmas-windows#latest

Welcome to the first official Fairy Bricks building contest in which you are invited to make a small vignette that can be a Christmas window in a UK department store. They will be displayed in a very large model of Selfridges in London's Oxford Street at Brick 2015, and show visitors will be invited to choose the best.

As this is a fund raising activity, there will be a bidding process for one of the 14 entry slots, which will happen in a couple of weeks. The minimum bid is £10 (or equivalent), but there is no maximum. We will also be suggesting a donation from visitors to vote.

The window vignette can can a model of a real or imagined display. I doubt the UK tradition is very different to that in international stores, but googling 'christmas windows display department stores London' will give you good examples.

So, spend the next couple of weeks thinking of building ideas and what you'd be prepared to bid. We will only reveal the range of bids, so you don't need to be embarrassed if your bid is particularly large! I will further announce details for bidding in a follow up post.

Prizes

Prizes will be bricks rather than sets, and first prize will at least include all of the bricks (new in bags) from Town Hall, as well as any others we can get our hands on.

Model Details

Your Vignette should be 14 bricks wide, of which the side bricks should be a wall. The window itself is 12 bricks wide, 6 bricks high and raised 2 bricks up. The window is included in the main department store model - you don't need to include it in your vignette - the front of your vignette must be open. You'll likely need to raise your vignette a brick or two, but you could also use that space to build a fancy floor, or hide some supports etc. You should go up 7 or 8 bricks high (and there is an absolute limit of 14 bricks in height). There will be a lighting strip above the windows to illuminate the contents - if there's a reason for darkness, then you'll need to add a roof.

You can make the vignette as deep as you like - for background/forced perspective etc.

Just remember that the vignette will be viewed through a window 12x6 bricks raised 2 bricks up.

This is a yellow minifig world - there will be crowds of yellow minifigs outside the store, so fleshie heads will generally look out of place. Not banned though, in case there is some artistic reason to include them. Not every vignette will include people or mannequins but I think it would be a good convention to have minifigs without faces if you include mannequins in your design.

My stand at Brick2015 does have power provided (so that I can illuminate all the windows from above), so there might be scope for custom lighting or animation. I'll do my utmost to display each entry at its best, but I don't think I can guarantee power if it means that we need too many power adaptors or wires in the way.

The Small Print

This is a physical building contest. You will need to get your model to the opening of Brick 2015 in London. I'm sure the community will do all it can to pass models across, and I'm happy to do a bit of tidying up if parts fall off, but I have 50,000 bricks to build on the main model, so I'm not about to start building someone's model from LDD instructions etc.

So-called illegal techniques are fine, as are your own stickers, or printed elements. I think the odd custom part isn't going to be a problem either.

I will expect the winning bidders to make payment (directly to FairyBricks) as soon possible after the winning bids are announced. I may have a few people on standby to step-in if payment isn't forthcoming.

Kev at Fairy Bricks has a a few ideas for further fundraising, so it would be very useful to be able to keep the entries for a while, but if you want your model returned, you'll need to make arrangements to collect it in person at the end of the show.

I think it goes without saying that this is a family show and FairyBricks is a children's charity, so entries should be appropriate for kids. I can't imagine that anyone would build an adult themed vignette but if they do then I reserve the right to not display it (I won't be able to return your entry fee as it will already be with Fairy Bricks).

If you'd like to see work-in-progress photos of the department store model then check out my Flickr stream: https://www.flickr.com/photos/67446715@N05/albums/72157659493861301

I'm sure there will be questions I haven't thought of, so feel free to ask anything here.

Oh, and if don't fancy entering, or are too far away, or if this announcement has reminded you of the good work that Fairy Bricks does then feel free to make a donation: https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/fairybricks

The Rucksack Project: 2015

The Rucksack Project is not a charitable organisation but a movement, which has spread across the world born out of a simple idea to help people sleeping rough on the streets during the cold winter months.

Anyone can help, anyone can take part as the project is all about helping the many doing a little thing to make a big difference in the world.

It is a very simple idea:
Go to charity shops
Get a rucksack, sleeping bag, flask, spoon, gloves, hat, fleece, undies, socks and extra food
Take it out and give it to a homeless person

Check the Rucksack Project website for more details as well as details about events happening

#penguinsfavalbums The Truth About Love - Pink

As it is my first wedding anniversary today, this week's pick is dedicated to Mrs Penguin. It is The Truth About Love by Pink

Unknown-6.jpeg

To be honest I didn't know much about Pink before meeting my other half, just knew the song Lets Get The Party Started, but Claire was a big fan of hers, and for her birthday treat a few years ago I took her to see Pink live. It was her The Truth of Love tour, so I borrowed the album beforehand to listen to, it was okay. But once I saw the live show, and if you ever get a chance I really do recommend seeing Pink live, pure stage show, great performer.

So afterwards started to listen to the album again, and slowly started to realise what a great album it is.

So happy anniversary Mrs Penguin from Mr Penguin

Is a Sustainable Future Worth A Conversation?

I was recently sent an interesting article by Art in Brighton about a group called 10:10 Brighton & Hove and about a project they have set up called The C-Side Challenge

The C-Side Project is all about helping people reduce their environmental impact, take steps against climate change, and be able to make informed travel and purchasing decisions.

They are running a free course, which started end of Sept and is run on evening and weekends.

http://www.brightonandhove1010.org/is-a-sustainable-future-worth-a-conversation/

What is it?
Brighton Peace and Environment Centre are running a series of workshops to help local communities be the change they wish to see, with the award-winning intervention called ‘Carbon Conversations’.

Join a small group of 6-8 people to explore responses to climate change and sustainability from a different approach.

Our two courses are being run at The Bevy or The Hop and Vine.

What are Carbon Conversations?
The meet ups will create a non-judgemental atmosphere where individuals are encouraged to make serious lifestyle changes. The groups offer:
·    A friendly, safe and supportive space to discuss your thoughts and emotions about the impact of climate change.
·    Practical support to develop your own plans as to how you want to go about making changes to your lifestyle, in a way that fits with your values and that you feel comfortable with.
·    A friendly group atmosphere, where participants support each other to make changes and feel enabled.
·    Support from local trained facilitators to help you develop leadership and practical skills to inspire others do the same.

What is the aim?
Through guided discussion, participants will improve confidence in their abilities to develop a sustainable lifestyle that align with their personal values.

Why participate?
Participants of the Carbon Conversations will learn about climate change basics, ideas for a low-carbon future and chat on four key areas of your footprint – home energy, travel, food and consumption. Each person will also receive a handbook, entitled, ‘In Time for Tomorrow‘ which has received rave reviews from some impressive climate champions:

“This lovely handbook covers it all…reckons honestly with the psychological impacts of a crisis that is far too easy for many of us to deny in our everyday lives…”
Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine.

“…truly remarkable…provides a framework for people to share the real reasons why they act the way they do…explores the landscape of hope…”
George Marshall, author of Don’t Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change

So why not be part of this innovative city-wide behaviour change initiative, funded by Brighton and Hove City Counciland delivered by Brighton Peace and Environment Centre and Brighton and Hove 10:10.

There is a choice of weekend OR evening events and you would need to attend all sessions where possible. Please email your name, address and contact details to projects@bpec.org or call 07979 321 998 to find out more, or register your interest.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Past participant quotes:‘Practical’…’Inspiring’…’Empowering’…’Enabling’…’ You can take things at your own pace’

Social Saturday 2015 - 10th Oct

This Saturday 10th October is Social Saturday. Info below is via http://www.socialsaturday.org.uk

The aim of Social Saturday 2015 is to raise awareness of just how easy it is to support social enterprises - businesses that put people and planet first, and use your spending power to make a positive difference to the world we live in.

image.jpg

The aim of Social Saturday 2015 is to raise awareness of just how easy it is to support businesses that trade quality items and services and invest profits in projects supporting the local community, international development, the environment, charities and a wealth of other progressive schemes.

Social enterprises operate in and support a vast array of sectors. With over 70,000 businesses in the UK alone trading for people and the planet - from print shops to chocolate, energy companies to beer, healthcare providers to baby clothes and housing to pants – the reach of our growing movement is undeniable. Click here for examples.

Following the immense success of last year's inaugural Social Saturday, this year, on 10th October we anticipate Social Saturday 2015 to be a true testament to the strength and influence of the social enterprise movement. We will achieve this by creating a more physical presence throughout the UK, so that the general public can identify social enterprises operating in their area and buy the products and services they provide.

So how can you get involved?

If you are a consumer, then consume! To visit our buy social directory click here and choose what project to support with your purchase. Don’t stop there – the fun has only begun! Tweet about your purchase, post on Instagram and pin on Pinterest with #socialsaturday2015 to spread the message. Last year our twitterati supporters included Jamie Oliver, 10 Downing Street and Tesco. We’d love to see what you’ve bought and who it’s helped!

Take a look at our Social Saturday map and visit these fantastic organisations in person to hear first-hand about how your purchase will make a real difference.

If you are a social enterprise, or business you can still consume! Here at SEUK our printing, graphics, office cleaning, water, event management, catering, promotional items and venue hire are all provided by social enterprises. See our Buy Social Guide for more inspiration.

Who's behind it?

Social Saturday is led by the national campaigning body, Social Enterprise UK, and is supported by the Cabinet Office. The day has cross party political support and is part of the UK's successful Buy Socialcampaign.

The Buy Social campaign aims to get more people buying from social enterprises. Following successful two year campaign to get more businesses trading with social enterprises, Buy Social is now calling on consumers to get involved.

Find out more about the Buy Social campaign.

Buying socially is such an obvious thing to do, why do we need the Social Saturday campaign?

The 2013 State of Social Enterprise Survey showed that social enterprises primarily trade with the general public and whilst three quarters of the public support the idea of social enterprise, awareness remains low. Social Saturday was launched in 2014 to help the general public to celebrate and buy from social enterprises, businesses that trade for people and planet.

On the day, people across the country hit the high street or went online to use their spending power for good and buy from social enterprises.

11 million people reached on Twitter via #socialsaturday
30+ events around the country celebrating the day
50+ media hits in the week before and on the day

The day was a huge success, with PM David Cameron writing to the Financial Times in support of social enterprises, Big Issue vendors taking our message to the streets in the run up, celebrities including Jamie Oliver and Freema Agyeman voicing their support on Twitter, and national media coverage in the Daily TelegraphGuardian and Which?.

This year we want Social Saturday 2015 to be even bigger.

@PIPManchester #playitforward New Way for Charities to Earn Money

Today I have been informed by PIP-UK, a charity for people who suffer with Poland Syndrome, a rare birth defect about a new way they have for raising money

http://arcaiduk.com/pip.html

Interesting idea, and it shows how charities need to think of new ways to fundraise.

Poland Syndrome is rare birth defect. So rare the actual number of incidences of Poland Syndrome across the UK and in fact the world is not known. It is estimated to be between 1 in 7,000 births to 1 in 30,000 births. It is more common in men than women in fact about it has been suggested the occurrence is like to be 75% more common in men.

Poland Syndrome appears visually on one side of the body, the chest can appear sunken on one side, and is frequently accompanied by a smaller hand on the same side. At birth there may be missing fingers, webbed fingers or joined digits. This is referred to as syndactyly. There has been some research to suggest around 10% of people who were born with syndactyly were also born with Poland Syndrome.

Dr Who & Lego: An Adventure in Bricks

Doctor Who is coming to Lego, and as both a Lego geek and a Dr Who fan this is a time I can't wait for.

This is the blog post from Lego Ideas announcing the new set coming out 1st Dec 2015

https://ideas.lego.com/blogs/1-blog/post/44

Looks amazing doesn't it? This set was chosen from the Lego Ideas, which if you not aware is a site which allows fans to submit projects, and if it gets 10k votes, it has the possibility of being turned into a real set. Previous Lego Ideas sets have included Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters, the Big Bang Theory, Exo-Suit by Peter Reid, A collection of birds.

This was the set which got the 10k votes,

Quite a few projects were submitted after Lego announced it was now accepting projects. Previously Character Building had the licence, thus there was no point in submitting ideas. I am not normally a fan of non Lego based mini figures but I did have to get this!

I think Doctor Who was always in Lego plans, as the Doctor is making an appearance in the new Lego Dimensions game

I think this is an theme, which has so much potential with Lego, they have all the old Doctors in the video game, so it is only time when actually mini figures and sets get released either via its own theme or via Lego Dimensions

To me it is the perfect match, the interesting thing is will it just appeal to people like me, AFOLs who grew up watching Dr Who as a kid, or will the kids of today like the idea of building their own Tardis. I hope so.

Now just a selection of pictures of what happens when fans of Lego and Dr Who combine

City Reuse Depot Urgently Needs Your Help

The City Reuse Depot did a Crowdfunder.co.uk campaign earlier this year and raised over £11k to set up a Reuse centre in Brighton, using 8 shipping containers.

Due to issues with finding these shipping containers a permanent home, they are currently in a temporary space and need to be moved ASAP

Can you help to (urgently) find land or a building in Brighton and Hove?

Land requirements for shipping containers

  • Vehicle access to site (preferably 7 days a week)
  • Level or able to be levelled site.
  • Each container needs minimum 7.5m x 2.5m x 2.5m of space.
  • 8 shipping containers need minimum  7.5m x 20m but ideally 12m x 32m (height requirement is 2.5m)
  • Within city boundaries (Shoreham to Saltdean and between coast and A27)
  • some sites will require special permissions for the containers - this needs to be in place already as it takes time and money to get those permissions...and we do not have time on our side.

Or Buildings that could used as a CRD (in the event that we sell all the containers)

  • Ground level access to space ina building
  • Easy vehicle access
  • Preferably ‘open space’ as opposed to rooms or complex layouts
  • Weatherproof
  • does not have to have electricity (though it would be nice)
  • Within city boundaries (Shoreham to Saltdean and between coast and A27)
  • agricultural or industrial buildings most likely options

The greatest priority is to find land THIS WEEK so containers can be moved THIS MONTH.
